The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 signed in December by the President includes the extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover for 2010 and 2011. People aged 70 ½ or more may make tax free distributions up to $100,000 per year from traditional or Roth IRA directly to qualified tax exempt organizations like the Luis Oasis Senior Center.
This may be especially appealing to non-itemizes, who would not be able to get a tax deduction for charitable gifts. To take advantage of this tax deduction in 2010, donors must fill out a form for an IRA Charitable Distribution Request with the financial institution that holds your IRA by January 31, 2011. The financial institution makes the distribution directly to your charitable designee, the Luis Oasis Senior Center.
Charitable donations are still deductible on income tax filings. Also of note are donations of appreciated assets such as stock. Stocks that were purchased below the current market value may be donated directly to the Luis Oasis Senior Center and avoid capital gains liability by providing a tax deduction for full amount of your donation. For example, if you acquired a stock for $1,000 and it is now valued at $10,000 you may donate the stock directly to Luis Oasis Senior Center. This would eliminate your entire capital gain on the stock and help the capital campaign to Raise a New Oasis. Consult your personal tax advisor to discuss how a charitable gift to the Luis Oasis Senior Center can reduce your tax liability in 2010.

DIRECTOR'S CORNER
Thank you to all who took the time to fill out our survey!
There were quite a lot of respondents and this will be make for a good representation of what our Center and community members would like to see in the future. If anyone would like to guess the number of people who took the survey, please write down your name, phone number and your guessed amount. There will be a small box at the receptionist's desk where you can put your guestimations. Winner will be announced in March's newsletter.
VOLUNTEERISM AT THE CENTER
Volunteering can be an incredibly rewarding experience -- that's why so many people do it. It's a great way to help others, and share your life experiences and wisdom -- plus you can always learn something new. One of the benefits of volunteering is that seniors pass on knowledge and encourage those younger or less experienced than themselves. Through volunteering, seniors share their stories with others, often fulfilling their need to share their experiences. Volunteering also allows those who have few or no family or relatives to enjoy the company of others thus creating bonds of lasting friendship.
Volunteer opportunities give seniors the outlet they need to continue to be useful to their communities. For many seniors, it allows them a chance to focus on their dreams and do things other than the job they have been doing for years. The office welcomes anyone who wishes to volunteer at any capacity! Please visit the Center and fill out a volunteer form and we can embark on a new journey of helping one another and reaping the rewards from reaching out to the community!!

NEW GRIEVERS SUPPORT GROUP
Oasis Senior Center has a grief support group that meets each Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 pm. We have been meeting for about 4 years and I have been one of the facilitators of this group since it's inception. We have had 4 facilitators leading the groups, each of us was responsible for one week a month. However, during the past couple of years we have lost 3 of our facilitators and gained two, and recently lost another, all for varying reasons. At the present time we just have 2 facilitators to cover the 4 weeks and sometimes 5 weeks in the month.
I feel this group has been an important part of the grieving process for those who have attended and I hope it has been as rewarding and helpful to them as it has been for me as their facilitator.
I am writing this as a request to find an additional facilitator for our group. We currently have 2 facilitators, and we would like to find one more. If you feel that you could be of help in leading a group like this, we would like to hear from you.
Please contact Rovi Butcher at the Oasis Senior Center at 937-9750.
Thank you for your consideration.

OASIS is planning a Flag Day event to honor veterans and will be hosting a meal at a reasonable price.
